Bears make OC change after embarrassing Week 10 loss

The Chicago Bears suffered their worst loss of the season on Sunday, and they have now decided to make a significant change to their coaching staff.

The Bears announced on Tuesday that Shane Waldron had been fired as offensive coordinator. Passing game coordinator Thomas Brown has been promoted to OC.

“After evaluating our entire operation, I decided that it is in the best interest of our team to move in a different direction with the leadership of our offense. This decision was well-thought-out, one that was conducted deliberately and respectfully,” Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said in a statement. “I would like to thank Shane for his efforts and wish him the best moving forward.

“Thomas is a bright offensive mind who has experience calling plays with a collaborative mindset. I look forward to his leadership over our offensive coaching staff and his plan for our players.”

Caleb Williams and Chicago’s offense showed some promise early in the season, but they have hit a wall over the last three weeks. The Bears have not scored a touchdown in their previous 23 possessions. Williams has not thrown a touchdown pass since Chicago played the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6, their last win.

Eberflus ruled out making a quarterback change following Sunday’s 19-3 home loss to the New England Patriots. At that point, it became clear that Waldron would take the fall.

Waldron was in his first season as the offensive coordinator in Chicago. The 45-year-old had served in the same role with the Seattle Seahawks for three years before being hired by the Bears.
