The 2024 NFL Draft cycle was dominated by criticism of Caleb Williams, not just for his play on the field, but also for his lifestyle off-field. Williams chose not to participate in on-field activities at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Further, he opted to meet with just one team, the Chicago Bears. However, six games into his rookie season, he has the Bears sitting pretty at 4-2 overall. Caleb Williams and the Bears have won three straight games, as well as an undefeated record at home. Despite a short sample size, the 2024 NFL Draft first overall pick looks like a veteran QB. Bears QB Caleb Williams is improving each game and proving his doubters wrong.
Last season, Justin Fields was the starting QB for the Bears. However, he failed to get the franchise over the hump, finishing with a 7-10 record overall. Fields has also found a new home, where he’s thriving in Pittsburgh. Ironically, he also has the Steelers sitting at 4-2 overall.
Some doubters thought that the Bears would be foolish to draft Caleb Williams. They considered him to be too immature to handle the bright lights of the NFL. Once again, he’s proving them wrong. Through six games this season, Bears fans are starting to come around to the decision to draft Williams.
Caleb Williams still has flaws that he must fix, as do the Chicago Bears. Williams has been sacked 20 times this season, which ranks second in the NFL. This includes seven sacks against the Houston Texans. The Bears won big against Jacksonville in London, but have struggled in road games against Houston and Indianapolis.
This season, GM Ryan Poles has surrounded Caleb Williams with extraordinary talent. Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen, both new additions to the Bears, are making significant contributions. Cole Kmet, the team’s starting tight end, is much improved this season. However, the team is still struggling to protect their quarterback. A main priority of Poles this offseason should be to reinforce his offensive line.
It’s still too early to rule that the Bears made the right decision. We are only six games into the season. Fellow rookie QB Jayden Daniels has looked phenomenal in Washington. However, if he can continue to win games and keep the Bears competitive, Caleb Williams might win over his doubters.
