Bears RB Kyle Monangai Dealing With Turf Toe

Bears running back Kyle Monangai could miss time with a turf toe injury, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. A one- to two-week absence may be on tap for the second-year running back, but his outlook as yet to be decided.

Monangai, 24, enters Week 5 as the NFL’s fourth-most productive ballcarrier this season. He has 324 rushing yards on just 60 carries, good for a 5.4 yards per attempt mark that ranks sixth in the league. The 2025 seventh-round pick also has three rushing touchdowns as part of a Chicago rushing attack that again ranks close to the top of the league.

If Monangai does miss a game or two, the Bears will lean on starting running back D’Andre Swift, who has 311 yards on 69 carries to start the year. Third-stringer Roschon Johnson has just 11 offensive snaps and five touches through four games, but he should also be in line for more work. Chicago only has three running backs on their 53-man roster at the moment, so Salvon Ahmed or Zavier Scott would also be elevated from the practice squad.

Turf toe injuries can linger, so while Monangai is initially hoping to play through the injury, the team may opt to hold him out so he can heal. He paired with Swift to form one of the league’s best rushing tandems in 2025, and after the veteran’s three-year extension, that partnership seems fated to continue for a few more seasons. Swift should be able to take on a bigger workload to spell a brief Monangai absence in the hopes of picking up where they left off in a few weeks.
