When a team invests a premium draft pick at a particular position, it often stirs up speculation—especially when that position group already includes a trusted starter. That’s exactly what’s happening in Chicago, where one long-tenured contributor continues to pop up in trade rumors. Despite being a core part of the offense for years, his future with the team has suddenly become a talking point—and fans are starting to wonder if a shakeup is looming.
Tight end Cole Kmet has spent five seasons in a Bears uniform, steadily building his reputation as one of the offense’s most reliable options. He’s not flashy, but he gets the job done. The 26-year-old has cleared 500 receiving yards in each of the last three years, topped off by a breakout 2023 campaign with 73 catches, 719 yards, and six touchdowns.
Kmet’s game is built on consistency and reliability, not splash plays. But after a slight dip in his 2024 output, questions have started swirling—especially after the Bears used a first-round pick on Colston Loveland. It’s the kind of move that naturally sparks speculation, even for veterans with solid résumés.
There’s already been speculation linking Kmet to potential trade destinations like the Steelers, and most recently, the Chiefs.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report didn’t hold back in his assessment of the situation:
‘There are a few reasons why Cole Kmet could be on the move sooner rather than later—even with three years left on his deal… Add in Kmet’s $11.6 million cap hit over each of the next three seasons, and a trade could free up nearly $10 million in 2025 alone.’
For his part, Kmet didn’t shy away from the awkwardness of the moment. He admitted he was surprised by the Loveland pick—but quickly gave credit to new head coach Ben Johnson for handling the situation the right way.
‘I think at first, you’re taken aback a little bit. But Ben was awesome about it… From there, you’re all on board.’
Johnson seems to have a plan that includes both tight ends, but in today’s NFL, plans can shift fast—especially when big contracts and depth charts collide. As the Bears look to balance cap space, scheme fit, and future development, Kmet’s name isn’t likely to disappear from the rumor mill anytime soon. For now, he’s still here. But stay tuned—Chicago may not be done making moves.
