Bears Work Out WRs Chase Claypool, Josh Reynolds
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

The Saints explored potential wide receiver signings on Tuesday as they prepare for an extended absence from first-round pick Jordyn Tyson. Veterans Chase Claypool and Josh Reynolds both worked out for the team, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Tyson, the sixth overall selection in April’s draft, is expected to miss two months with a hamstring injury, leaving behind a paper-thin receiver room in New Orleans. Behind Chris Olave – who has a notable injury history of his own – the Saints’ most proven wideouts are Devaughn Vele and Trey Palmer, neither of whom have recorded more than 500 yards in a season or averaged more than 30 yards per game in their careers. The rest of the room is made up of recent Day 3 picks and UDFAs who have never eclipsed 200 yards in a season.

Claypool and Reynolds both offer significantly more experience, though their most productive seasons are multiple years in the past.

Claypool, a Steelers second-round pick in 2020, racked up 1,733 yards (55.9 yards per game) and 11 touchdowns in his first two NFL seasons. He was pushed down the depth chart by George Pickens in 2022 and was traded to the Bears at the deadline. His numbers dropped precipitously in Chicago, eventually leading to another trade to Miami the following year. Across the two seasons, he recorded just 528 yards across 27 games (19.6 YPG) and two touchdowns.

The 28-year-old signed with the Bills in 2024 but was waived after a season-ending injury. His workout in Chicago is his third attempt to break back into the NFL this year after a tryout with the Packers in the spring and another with the Colts at the beginning of August.

Reynolds, 31, began his career as a Rams fourth-round pick in 2017. His role in Los Angeles steadily grew, and in 2020, he started 13 games and recorded career-highs of 52 receptions and 618 yards. He signed with the Titans in free agency in 2021, but he barely featured in the offense and was waived in November after appearing in just five games.

The Lions claimed Reynolds off waivers, and he immediately took on a starting role and averaged 43.7 yards per game over the rest of the season. A two-year extension kept him in Detroit through the 2023 season, during which time he appeared in 31 games (24 starts) and recorded 1,087 yards (35.1 YPG) and eight touchdowns. Reynolds could not carve out a role in Denver or Jacksonville the following year, and his 2025 season with the Jets was cut short by a season-ending knee injury.
