In his introductory press conference on Wednesday, new Chicago Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson was emotional, transparent, invigorating, and downright inspirational.
In 22 years covering the #Bears, not sure I’ve seen a head coach at Halas Hall more impressive than Ben Johnson was today in terms of command, confidence and eloquence. Winning a press conference means little but showing the ability to communicate matters—especially here and now.

After receiving applause from the media pool, Johnson acknowledged the coaches and players who have helped him reach this point in his career. Johnson was visibly emotional when discussing his departure from the culture and camaraderie he helped build with the players and staff in Detroit.
"One of the hardest things to do is leave a group of men you love. One of the reasons you get into coaching is to make the people around you better. But the truth is, those guys made me a better coach and a better person. They inspired me every single day."

Johnson went on to thank the Bears search committee, noting how clear it was that the Bears' priorities were straight. He elaborated that the only way to succeed is by having the right people in place and that he believes the Bears have all the pieces in place to build a sustained winner in Chicago.

When discussing the pieces in place, those are not exclusive to the front office and team management. Johnson complimented the roster construction, calling it "loaded with talent." This job was Johnson's target, and he made that clear to the Bears' search committee. Between the people and culture of Chicago, the facilities at Halas Hall, and the pieces already in place, Johnson saw everything he was looking for.
"Everyone wants to talk about the quarterback. Caleb, I am excited to get to work with you, but it is going to take more than just you."
– Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson
Johnson talked about the NFC North being the most challenging division in the NFL and how much he enjoys beating Matt LaFleur twice a year. He then sent a message to the Bears players to get comfortable with being uncomfortable because he is setting the bar higher than ever before.

Hearing Johnson discuss the Bears' future goals was a breath of fresh air. Before stating his mission statement, he highlighted communication, structure, and consistency as pillars to build upon.
"Our mission, starting this spring, is to win, and win now"

When asked how quickly the Bears can get back to being competitive/contending for the playoffs, Ben Johnson pointed to 2025 as a realistic possibility: "There’s no question it can happen in 2025. Depends how hard we’re willing to sacrifice and how hard we’re willing to work."

Time to wake up that sleeping giant! Doesn't sound like someone expecting a slow build. His mission statement? "To win, and win now."
Is this real life?
