Ben Johnson’s immediate take on Jeffery Simmons’ Bears debut

The Chicago Bears knew they were getting a difference maker in defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. That’s why they traded away two first-round picks to acquire him. In his first opportunity, Simmons justified the price tag.

The Bears moved to 6-2 with a 34-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8. In the win, Simmons put up six tackles, two for a loss, a sack and a pass defended. Even if he didn’t register a stat, the defensive tackle routinely pushed the offensive line back.

Simmons’ presence helped unleash other members of Chicago’s defense as well, since the Seahawks had to pay so much attention to the Bears newest star. Both Montez Sweat and Devin Bush came away with sacks while James Lynch recorded his first career interception.

The Bears still have some holes to fix on defense. But Simmons’ debut painted Chicago’s unit in a much brighter light.

While head coach Ben Johnson is an offensive mastermind, he isn’t naive to Simmons’ playmaking ability on the defensive line. Ever since the trade was announced, Chicago has been buzzing. Johnson got to see exactly why on Monday Night Football, via the head coach’s postgame press conference.

“Our guys were excited from the moment they heard the news we’re bringing him on,” Johnson said. “He’s fit right in. We’ve got a high character locker room, and he is that himself. You can feel his presence out there, whether it’s during or after the play. I think that elevates everyone around him. I thought he played outstanding. His impact was profound.”

Simmons’ performance came after he was traded to the Bears earlier in the week. His raw talent won over. Now, the defensive tackle will have more time to learn defensive coordinator Dennis Allen’s scheme. Chicago will only up his snap count as the weeks go on.

The Bears swung their blockbuster trade for Simmons due to their belief they can win a Super Bowl. Johnson now knows fully just how impactful he can really be.
