The Pittsburgh Steelers are in need of a new head coach for the first time since January 2007 after Mike Tomlin stepped down from his post on Tuesday.
Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger still has ties to the organization but has never served as a coach at a high level. During the latest edition of his podcast, Roethlisberger was asked if he would have any interest in possibly replacing Tomlin this winter.
"Zero chance," Roethlisberger responded, per Ross McCorkle of Steelers Depot. "Zero chance. No chance, not this guy. I will say this. I'll put it out there. If [Steelers ownership] says, 'Hey Ben, we'd love to bring you in to consult on a new coach and talk to him,' I would absolutely be open to doing that. But I'm not coaching. No chance."
Some of Roethlisberger's contemporaries have remained busy while attached to specific teams. Living legend and current Las Vegas Raiders minority owner Tom Brady is reportedly helping "run" that club's front office, along with general manager John Spytek. Fellow retired quarterback Matt Ryan was recently named the Atlanta Falcons' new president of football even though he had no prior experience holding such a job with an NFL franchise.
Some have suggested the Steelers should target offensive-minded candidates for their next head coach, in part because the franchise hasn't had a long-term answer at quarterback since Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season. Additionally, the Pittsburgh offense produced little of note during the club's 30-6 wild-card playoff loss to the Houston Texans.
"Why not bring in a head coach that's offensive-minded, that would kind of change it up?" Roethlisberger asked during the episode, per Joe Clark of Steelers Depot. "Because, listen, let's be honest. Six points is not enough points in a playoff game. You can't do that. Let's bring in a head coach that's offensively-minded and allow him to then bring in a defensive coordinator. I would love to see a little bit of a shift in the head coach to be more of an offensive guy."
As of Wednesday morning, it was unknown if Steelers ownership would listen to Roethlisberger's advice or even reach out to him about consulting during the club's hiring process.
