The Washington Commanders took things slowly with Ben Sinnott in Year 1 of his professional career. All signs are pointing to the tight end taking a major leap forward this time around.
Washington didn't need Sinnott to be anything more than a rotational project as a rookie. Being a second-round pick came with added expectations, but the Commanders had a long-term plan in place for his gradual development. This was the correct approach, especially considering Zach Ertz and John Bates were performing so well as the starting tandem.
Ertz and Bates both deservedly got new deals this offseason. That wasn't an indictment of Sinnott's progress — far from it. It just means that quarterback Jayden Daniels will have several dependable options in the passing game to call upon at the tight end spot if the former Kansas State standout makes the strides needed.
It's still early in the process, but the reports are incredibly encouraging. Sinnott looks a lot sharper as a route-runner. He is gaining more trust from Daniels and the coaching staff. He's already an outstanding blocker, so if this part of his game is polished accordingly, the sky's the limit.
Dan Quinn agrees. The head coach named Sinnott among those whom he's been especially pleased by throughout Washington's preparations so far. He put in the hard work during his time away from the team, and it's having the desired effect.
Sinnott's an easy guy to root for. He placed his complete trust in the Commanders' strategy to build him slowly but surely. There were notable flashes when reps came his way, but what comes next is more important. It's a challenge he's responding to well, which is a trend that can hopefully continue as the summer progresses.
In an ideal world, Sinnott will gain more responsibilities in the passing attack. Ertz performed well last season to galvanize his career, but he isn't getting any younger. The Commanders didn't draft a long-term option at No. 53 overall last year for him to be on the fringes. They want him to flourish as a potential franchise cornerstone.
Although Sinnott is a long way from that right now, there's just no telling what he might be able to accomplish if he builds on this newly acquired momentum.
