  • The Cincinnati Bengals face the Steelers after four straight losses; the defense struggles, ranking 30th in points allowed.
  • An important secondary player is a healthy scratch, surprising fans and analysts pregame.
  • No explanation yet on the decision; his return timeline remains uncertain.

The Cincinnati Bengals are in dire need of a win heading into Thursday night’s primetime matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After logging back-to-back wins in their first two games of the NFL season, the Joe Burrow-less Bengals have suffered four straight losses and have fallen to 2-4.

Defense has been one of the weak spots for the Bengals thus far. Entering the Steelers game, they’ve allowed opponents to score 183 points against them, which ranks 30th in the NFL. One player who has played a significant role in Cincinnati’s secondary early on is cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt, who has now been involved in an unexpected update just before kickoff on Thursday.

Taylor-Britt is no superstar, but there’s no denying that he has been an essential piece in the Bengals’ defensive schemes. The former Nebraska Cornhuskers star has played in five out of Cincinnati’s six games this season. The only contest he missed was Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings, which the 26-year-old sat out because of a hamstring injury.

Taylor-Britt has since been active and has played in all three of Cincinnati’s games after his one-game injury absence. He’s also been healthy throughout the week, and there have been no reports of a new injury.

This is exactly why it came as a surprise when the Bengals announced just before kickoff that Taylor-Britt was included in the game’s inactive list.

As of writing, there has been no explanation from the team as to why they decided to place Taylor-Britt on the inactive list. Under multiple defensive coordinators, the cornerback has been in and out of the doghouse over the past two seasons, but this is the first time Taylor-Britt has been a healthy scratch.

It is unclear if this decision was brought about by disciplinary reasons, an internal strategy shift or a last-minute coaching adjustment. Either way, Taylor-Britt will not be taking the field for “Thursday Night Football.”

The Bengals should provide an update on Taylor-Britt’s situation, but at this point, there will be uncertainty about his status for Cincinnati’s next game and, potentially, beyond.

After Thursday’s divisional matchup against the Steelers, the Bengals will be back in action next Sunday, Oct. 26, in a home game at Paycor Stadium against the New York Jets.
