The most noteworthy move related to the 2026 NFL Draft made by the Cincinnati Bengals involved the club trading the No. 10 selection to the New York Giants for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II via a deal that was announced on April 19.
While speaking with reporters on Monday, Bengals director of player personnel/de facto general manager Duke Tobin expanded on why he was comfortable with giving up such a lucrative draft asset to land Lawrence.
"It's one of the attractive things about trading a 10th pick for an All-Pro," Tobin explained, per Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' website. "You know exactly what you're getting. And you're getting immediate impact. That was something that was a big decision point for us. We get immediate impact instead of impact as we go. So that was important."
Safety Caleb Downs and pass-rusher Rueben Bain Jr. were among some noteworthy defensive players who were available at pick No. 10 and will now be on inexpensive rookie contracts over at least the next several seasons. As for Lawrence, the Bengals signed him to an extension that could keep the 28-year-old attached to the club through at least the 2028 campaign. He is coming off a disappointing season that occurred after an elbow injury prematurely ended his 2024 campaign, but Tobin sounds confident that Lawrence will prove to be worth everything the Bengals gave up to get him.
"I don't give up the 10th pick in the draft," Tobin said. "I enjoy the draft, and I think adding those young players is a real positive. We do an analysis of who we might be giving up. You never know who the first nine picks are going to be, but we do those analyses, and we look at who we might be foregoing to get this done, and we felt like whoever it was, it was a good move for us. That's why we moved forward with it and tried to make it work. You have to make it work for the Giants as well, and that pick is attractive enough to make it work."
Lawrence was arguably the NFL's best interior lineman during the 2024 season before he hurt his elbow. If he reclaims that form with the Bengals this fall, Tobin's gamble could help the club hold onto star quarterback Joe Burrow beyond the 2026 season.
