Bengals Sign New Tight End After Tanner Hudson’s Injury
Katie Stratman-USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Bengals are adding depth at tight end after placing Tanner Hudson on injured reserve. The team announced Tuesday that rookie Josh Kattus has joined the practice squad, while safety Russ Yeast has been signed to the active roster.

Hudson landed on injured reserve Monday with a torn pectoral muscle, leaving Cincinnati without one of its options at tight end. The move means he will miss at least four games, creating a need for additional depth as the Bengals continue their regular-season schedule.

Kattus, a 6-foot-4 rookie from Kentucky, originally signed with Cincinnati as a college free agent in May. He spent the offseason and training camp with the Bengals before being waived during final roster cuts in August. He had not joined another team during the first six weeks of the season.

The return gives Kattus another opportunity to work within Cincinnati’s offense. His immediate role will involve learning the playbook and preparing in case the coaching staff needs additional tight end depth. The team has not announced that he will be elevated for its next game.

Cincinnati also made a move in the secondary, signing Yeast from the practice squad to the active roster. The third-year safety has already been elevated for two games this season and recorded three tackles during those appearances.

Yeast’s promotion fills an active-roster spot after Hudson’s placement on injured reserve. Cincinnati also released safety Isaiah Nwokobia from the practice squad and signed linebacker Emany Johnson to that unit.

The changes give the Bengals additional options at two positions as they navigate the middle of the season. Kattus will provide practice-squad tight end depth, while Yeast can contribute on defense and special teams if called upon.

Head coach Zac Taylor’s staff must now adjust its available personnel without Hudson. The tight end’s absence could affect rotation and personnel packages, making it important for Cincinnati’s remaining options to handle their assignments.

Kattus has a chance to establish himself again in the organization, but his signing is a depth move rather than a guaranteed promotion. Cincinnati will determine his game-day role based on preparation and its needs in the coming week.
