The Pittsburgh Steelers still believe they are in win-now mode.
Right or wrong, with potential Hall of Famers like T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward and Minkah Fitzpatrick approaching the latter end of their prime, they have no other choice.
Which according to Bill Cowher, should light a fire under some of the decisions that need to be made this offseason...
"I don’t know where they are right now in terms of their quarterback situation with Russell [Wilson], and Justin [Fields], and Aaron [Rodgers]," Coach Cowher said on the Dan Patrick show. "I think a decision has to be made. What’s the future plan and what’s the plan in the interim? I think there’s gotta be a sense of urgency of taking some guys on the backend of their careers, T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward. They’re in the latter stages of their career. They want to win now. And that’s a big part of what they want to do.”
An interesting side note in Cowher's commentary was his mention of Aaron Rodgers. It has to be noted that news broke over the weekend that he and the New York Jets would be parting ways.
But Cowher name name-dropping Rodgers in the Steelers QB plans is noteworthy nonetheless given the fact he's a Super Bowl winning coach who still has plenty of ties to the franchise.
But the meat of his statement is what rings true. Cam Heyward might have just played the best season of his career in his mid-30s and T.J. Watt hasn't shown many signs of slowing down, but you cant count on that forever.
Watt is heading into the final year of his contract, and while an extension is the most likely outcome, who's to say he's not skittish on re-upping for another 2-4 years if the Steelers can't sell him on a QB plan.
Because no matter how much complimentary football the Steelers want to play, you need a top 10 QB to win a Super Bowl, and it's unclear if Pittsburgh is going to have a signal caller of such stature anytime soon.
