Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has experienced quite an emotional offseason that included the firing of head coach Sean McDermott, the promotion of offensive coordinator Joe Brady to serve as McDermott's replacement and the birth of Allen's first child.
Additionally, Allen turns 30 years old on May 21 of this year. While speaking with reporters on Monday, he indicated he believes his best playing days are still ahead of him.
"I’m not too sure on the science of the athletic peak of a male, but I think it’s slightly beyond 30," Allen explained, per John Wawrow of the Associated Press. "And then hopefully the dad strength kicks in, right?"
While Allen is a one-time regular-season Most Valuable Player Award winner, the 2018 first-round draft pick has yet to play in a Super Bowl. This past January, he committed four turnovers in Buffalo's 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round of the playoffs.
"That want to win will never change," Allen said about participating in the Bills' offseason program after he and his wife, actress Hailee Steinfeld, announced the birth of their daughter earlier in April. "The why I want to do it has. So why I want to do it is to show my family, to show my daughter how hard you need to work in order to accomplish something so great. And as long as I play this game, that’s going to be my mindset."
Fair or not, the perception exists that Allen is a big reason the Bills didn't hire an outsider to be their new head coach. Brady became Allen's coordinator on an interim basis during the 2023 campaign, and Brady then held the full-time job over the past two seasons.
"Just wanted to make sure my presence is felt here, and trying to relay what Joe has in store for us," Allen added about being in the Bills' facility for voluntary workouts. "New message. New vibe. New guys. And it’s been a good change. Still respecting the past and what’s been here for the last 10 years, not shying away from that. But also having his own twist to it."
It remains to be seen if those "good" changes will result in Allen playing on Super Bowl Sunday as a 30-year-old this coming February.
