Josh Allen plunged into the end zone from one yard out with about a minute left in the second quarter Sunday, tying the Buffalo Bills with the New England Patriots at 14-14 and claiming sole possession of the franchise record for touchdowns from scrimmage.

The score was Allen’s 88th rushing or receiving touchdown in a Bills uniform. He entered the game tied with Hall of Famers Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed at 87.

Reed and Thomas had shared the mark since Reed scored his final touchdown for Buffalo in 1999. Both were central figures on the teams that reached four straight Super Bowls after the 1990 through 1993 seasons.

Reed totaled 87 touchdowns over 15 seasons with the Bills, 86 of them on receptions and one on the ground. Thomas reached the same number in 12 seasons, with 65 rushing scores and 22 receiving touchdowns.

Allen’s route to the record has been different. He entered Sunday with 85 rushing touchdowns and two receiving scores. The short run against New England pushed his rushing total to 86, the most by any quarterback in NFL history.

He had matched the previous franchise record a week earlier. In Buffalo’s 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Allen scored twice on one-yard runs, the second of them with 7:35 left in the fourth quarter to give the Bills their first lead.

Through the first three games of 2026, Allen had already rushed for six touchdowns, tying him for the NFL lead. He has scored multiple rushing touchdowns in each of those contests.

The Bills opened the season 3-0. Allen has thrown for 786 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions in that span, completing 56 of 86 passes.

Sunday’s game at Highmark Stadium carried early division stakes. The Patriots arrived at 1-2 after a lopsided loss the previous week, while Buffalo looked to build on a defense that limited the Chargers despite five turnovers by the offense.

Allen, in his ninth season, has now scored 88 touchdowns from scrimmage in roughly the time it took Reed and Thomas more than a decade each to reach 87. His two career receiving touchdowns remain a small part of the total.

The 30-year-old quarterback already holds several other Bills records, including single-season passing yards and single-season passing touchdowns. The latest mark adds another line to a career built largely on the ground as well as through the air.

Buffalo’s offense has led the league in points scored through three weeks. Allen’s dual-threat production has been the main driver, even on days when the passing game has been uneven.

The record-setting run came on a drive extended by a penalty, after the Patriots appeared to have forced a field-goal situation. The score leveled the game heading into halftime.

Allen’s next opportunities will come with the Bills still atop the AFC East standings. The franchise record for touchdowns from scrimmage now belongs to him alone.
