Bills Reveal Reason For Re-Signing 2 Key Defensive Veterans: 'History!'

The Buffalo Bills' defense still feels to be where the team can improve the most and it appears general manager Brandon Beane feels the same way.

The franchise signed veterans Jordan Poyer and Jordan Phillips to the team with roster cutdowns finalized to beef up the secondary with Poyer and the defensive line with Phillips.

But what led the Bills to bring back two players who are embedded into the fabric of Buffalo?

“Both JPs, we've had a lot of history with both of those guys,” Beane said. “Both of them have had great impacts here, on the field, but culture, character, leadership, all those things, you can't find enough guys like that. When you got guys who have given so much and been a part of the success we've had here that want to come back and be on the practice squad, prepare themselves to play, if and when called on, but also mentor guys around them, young guys, young vets, whatever it is.”

The hope is that once Poyer and Phillips, who will both start on the practice squad, give head coach Sean McDermott a couple of levers to pull if needed, with the veteran pair able to step in and help the younger players on the roster in terms of their development.

Not only that, but if injuries strike, the Bills would be more than comfortable to have Poyer and Phillips chime in for a couple of games if needed.

As Beane said, you can't have enough veteran players who bring leadership qualities, on your team, and who knows, we may look back on these two transitions as ones who gave Buffalo that extra boost in their Super Bowl charge.
