Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is known not to smile. It's a running gag across Bills Mafia circles, but he had plenty to smile about in the third episode of HBO's "Hard Knocks" after agreeing to terms with the team on a four-year, $48 million contract extension with $30 million guaranteed. Cameras had access to record inside the Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane's office, and it showed the special moment between Cook and him. As you would expect, Beane did most of the talking.
"I'm happy, man. Excited for you, as you said in the text, 'let's go win it.'"
The general manager was also clearly excited, as before his interaction with Cook, he shared the news with his assistant, Andrea Gosper. We think everyone had a similar reaction when they heard the news. Buffalo keeps one of their top weapons for the next four seasons with an MVP leading the charge. A bit of a late night for Beane, though.
"I got James done. Let's (expletive) go... We got done about eleven last night."
Draft, develop, and re-sign has always been the motto at One Bills Drive, and it's something that he brought up in an interview during the episode. From Cook's draft class alone, the team has re-signed Khalil Shakir, Christian Benford, and Terrel Bernard.
"That's our motto here. We want to draft, develop and sign and extend our own. James being the latest one is a great feeling."
The superstar running was, of course, going to be interviewed after inking that massive new contract. All he's wanted to do is play football, and now that the contract situation is over, it's all about the game.
"Going through the whole process. Having a holdout, knowing I love football more than anything, and wanting to be out there. (I'm) Speechless, it's something you dream for your whole life, and for it to come true is just a blessing."
Even offensive coordinator Joe Brady knew that this would be a big moment for Cook, joining in on the fun that the running back doesn't smile. When he learned the news at practice during a later segment in the documentary, he asked, "Did he even smile when he signed the contract?"
Cook is excited, Beane is excited, Bills Mafia is excited. It was a perfect night of television with more than enough laughs and memorable moments. But at the end of the day, Cook is right: just go win it.
