Brett Favre endorses Donald Trump for President

Less than two weeks after Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre said ratings in sports are dropping because "fans clearly do not want political messaging mixed with their sports," he decided to go against his own advice and publicly endorse President Trump for re-election.

Favre tweeted that he was voting for "what makes this country great" and cited the First and Second Amendments as some of the values he believes Trump embodies, along with "hard working tax paying citizens, police & military."

Trump has received endorsements from several prominent athletes over the last few weeks, including legendary former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden, golf icon Jack Nicklaus and Jay Cutler. The recent wave of high-profile support may have to do with Trump trailing Biden in nearly every poll with the election less than a week away. And in a swing state like Wisconsin, getting an endorsement from one of the state's most beloved athletes ever can't hurt.

But when it comes to Favre and his "stick to sports" message and subsequent hypocrisy, it follows a general trend of people only not wanting athletes and celebrities to share their political opinions when they don't line up with their own views. And while there have been substantial drops in ratings in the NBA and MLB, it's pure conjecture that those numbers have anything to do with players being more outspoken politically.

As for the NFL, ratings have actually remained solid this season and the slight decline in viewership seems to mainly be due to the nationwide pandemic that's been going on for the last seven months.
