Brian Callahan again addresses Cam Ward's fiery comments about Titans

Roughly 24 hours after Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward expressed frustration over the fact that the Titans lost their first four games of the season, Titans head coach Brian Callahan noted that Ward "wants nothing more than to play well and to win."

While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Callahan offered an additional response to Ward's fiery comments that included saying that the Titans are "a--" at 0-4.

Cam Ward is still "growing up" as a rookie QB1

"He's a young player," Callahan said about Ward, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "You know, he’s the No. 1 overall pick. He’s the face of the franchise, if you will. He’s got high expectations for himself. We have high expectations around him, and we all want to meet those, and his ability to be in that spotlight in that moment, I think, is a growing process for him. I think he’s growing up. I think he’s starting to understand the weight of his words, what those things mean, when he speaks and everyone’s listening and watching."

It's understandable that Ward, Callahan and others within the Titans may be struggling to remain positive heading into the first weekend of October. A Wednesday report suggested that the Titans could move on from Callahan, who holds a 3-18 record as Tennessee's head coach, as soon as during the club's Week 10 bye unless he notches at least a couple of wins over the next month.

Meanwhile, Pro Football Reference shows that Ward ranks last in the NFL among qualified players with a 19.8 adjusted QBR on the campaign.

This can be a teaching moment for Cam Ward

"He’s learning how to deal with you guys and how to understand how to have those conversations and still maintain the image that he wants to maintain as a starting quarterback," Callahan added. "So, growing up is not always easy, and I think there’s some things that he’s learning along the way, just like we all do."

As of Thursday morning, ESPN BET had the Titans as 7.5-point road underdogs for this coming Sunday's matchup at the 2-2 Arizona Cardinals. Ward soon could find himself learning while working under an interim coach if the Titans produce another stinker at State Farm Stadium.
