The Minnesota Vikings are coming out of the 2024 season with a top-five defense. Brian Flores runs a tremendous scheme that does a great job of maximizing his talent and catering everything to the players.
Despite the high ranking last year, the Vikings have a lot of new players on the roster, including up to five new starters on defense. The new pieces on the defensive line will make a huge difference, but the cornerback room continues to raise questions.
The one spot on the Vikings' defense that raises concerns is at cornerback, with some prevailing questions at safety as well.
It seems everyone is selling the secondary really short. I think they could be really good. Why do you think this is the narrative?

The biggest questions surrounding the Vikings are with the depth at cornerback. Outside of Byron Murphy Jr., there isn't another player who has shown any consistency at the National Football League level.
That in itself is the biggest question with the Vikings. Who is going to step up at cornerback? The Vikings are incredibly bullish on Isaiah Rodgers, and this quote from Flores reiterates that fact.
"He's been on my radar since he was at UMass, a fast playmaker. I think he's one of these kind of late-round guys who found his way in the league in the kicking game. And got in some games and made some plays. I've always thought he was a good player and was ascending. And the opportunity presented itself that we could maybe acquire him. I was all in, and I'm happy we got him. He's been a great addition. He's got a great kind of football IQ and acumen. That's something that we stressed, really, throughout the group, at all levels, secondary, second level, and obviously D line. And I think it's just a great addition we talk about, you know, bringing guys in who as far as building a synergy within the group. How does this guy mesh with Murph (Byron Murphy Jr.) and Harry (Harrison Smith) and Telly (Josh Metellus), and he's just come in and done a great job from that standpoint."
That in itself is the biggest reason why there are questions about the cornerback group. After Rodgers isn't a proven veteran like a Shaquill Griffin or Stephon Gilmore like there was last year. The Vikings have Mekhi Blackmon, who is coming off of a torn ACL, Jeff Okudah, and last year's UDFA Dwight McGlothern. It's not a room that leaves much to be desired.
That is why there were so many discussions about both Jalen Ramsey and Jaire Alexander. Having either of them on the roster would take the Vikings' cornerback room from a question mark to a positive.
There is one element that isn't being discussed enough when it comes to the cornerback position: it's a weak link system. If you don't have star players, it's okay. The key is to not have a single weak link, making it harder for the offense to attack the defense as a whole.
If two of Rodgers, Okudah, and McGlothern can step up and be solid, the Vikings' defense will be just fine. That is a decent size ask, but if anyone can get it out of them, it's Flores.
