Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has made it clear that George Pickens must contribute in more ways than catching passes as the team prepares for its Week 7 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Pickens has given Dallas another dangerous option in the passing game, but Schottenheimer wants the wide receiver to become more involved in the team’s rushing attack. With the Cowboys looking to turn their season around, the coach emphasized that every player has responsibilities beyond their primary role.
Schottenheimer’s biggest concern centers on Pickens’ blocking, an area that could help Dallas become a more balanced offensive team. The head coach explained that receivers must help clear space for running back Javonte Williams by blocking defensive backs and safeties near the line of scrimmage.
“He needs to understand that he impacts us in the running game as well,” Schottenheimer said, per ESPN’s Ed Werder.
The coach added that Pickens must contribute as a blocker in the same way Williams helps the passing game by picking up blitzes. Schottenheimer views those responsibilities as part of putting the team’s needs ahead of individual production.
“You know, he’s got to do the same thing in the run game, picking up safeties and blocking corners — just like Javonte does, picking up blitzes so he can catch balls. That’s part of the team-first mindset, and GP does understand that, “Schottenheimer said.
Improving in that area could help Dallas establish a more effective ground game and make its offense less predictable.
Although Schottenheimer identified blocking as an area for improvement, Pickens has remained a productive target through the opening weeks of the season.
According to Sports Illustrated, Pickens has recorded 33 receptions for 428 yards and one touchdown entering Week 7. He has also received 52 targets, compared with 69 for fellow wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Pickens’ ability to make contested catches and stretch the field gives the Cowboys an important weapon in the passing game. However, Dallas needs its receivers to contribute even when they are not the intended targets on a play.
A more effective running game could also benefit Pickens and the passing attack. If the Cowboys consistently gain yards on the ground, defenses may have to devote more attention to stopping Williams, potentially creating additional opportunities for Prescott to find his receivers.
Despite his criticism of Pickens’ blocking, Schottenheimer also praised the receiver for maintaining his composure when he does not receive the ball.
“GP is one of those guys where I don’t ever see him really affected in terms of you know the emotion,” Schottenheimer said.
The coach acknowledged that rotating players through the offense can affect their opportunities and involvement. His comments suggest that he appreciates Pickens’ ability to remain composed while still expecting him to improve his contribution to the overall game plan.
The challenge now is turning that message into better execution on the field. Dallas will need its passing game to remain productive while finding ways to improve its rushing attack.
