Brian Schottenheimer makes his first shocking gameday decision as Cowboys head coach and it's a truly confusing one

Dallas Cowboys fans want to see fifth-round rookie Jaydon Blue emerge as RB1 at some point this regular season because of how explosive he is. But the coaching staff just made it very clear it doesn't see him in the same light.

Blue failed to make the gameday roster for the NFL Kickoff versus the Philadelphia Eagles, being listed as one of seven inactive players. He's a healthy scratch.

That means the Cowboys are starting the season with only Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders at running back. Fullback Hunter Luepke will suit up, too, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get some carries.

What now for Jaydon Blue?

Fans and media members alike expected Blue to have a role on offense early on because he brings something to the table that other veterans don't.

His speed, acceleration, and big-play ability are seemingly unmatched on the roster. But is the coaching staff maybe more concerned about the RB3 contributing on special teams and being reliable on pass protection? Does it mean wide receiver KaVontae Turpin will be getting a significant amount of rush attempts?

There's no way of knowing for sure but what the Cowboys offense does on the gridiron Thursday night could provide some important clues.

Blue missed time in the preseason due to an ankle injury

Though Blue wasn't on the injury report and is healthy on paper, he did miss significant time in August, including two preseason games with an ankle injury. When he played in the preseason finale, he also exited the game hurt.

Perhaps the missed time has to do with him being a confusing inactive in Week 1.

One thing is for sure: If the Cowboys fail to have explosive rush attempts on Thursday night, Brian Schottenheimer will face a bunch of questions about the decision as soon as the game ends. It's clearly the right call in the eyes of the staff but it's one we didn't see coming at all.
