Brian Schottenheimer takes a firm stance on CeeDee Lamb criticism after multiple drops during Cowboys opener

The Dallas Cowboys had a chance to beat the Philadelphia Eagles during the NFL Kickoff game on Thursday night. And had CeeDee Lamb not dropped a big-time throw in the team's final drive, they might have sealed the deal.

That was one of a few drops from Lamb, who had an uncharacteristic night in that department albeit catching seven passes for 110 yards. After the game, the Cowboys wide receiver took full accountability and promised to be better moving forward.

However, head coach Brian Schottenheimer is taking a firm stance on things. In his eyes, the defeat doesn't fall on Lamb's shoulders.

Brian Schottenheimer not worried about Lamb's drops

"I don’t worry about CeeDee Lamb," Schottenheimer told reporters postgame. "He’s going to be fine — what a great player. This was a team defeat, and we own that."

It's a simple statement but an important one. The Cowboys win together and lose together. That doesn't mean Schottenheimer is satisfied with the result, though.

"We know where we can go as a football team," Schottenheimer said. "I love the competition; I thought the guys competed their butts off, and that was great. But at the end of the day, we’re about winning, and we didn’t win tonight, so it’s not good enough."

Schottenheimer added the Cowboys had a "tale of two halves" kind of outing, with the offense dominating the first half and the defense stealing the show in the second, but the sides fail to hit all cylinders at the same time.

To Schottenheimer's point about Lamb, the Cowboys' star wide receiver had a great game as far as generating separation goes. Now it's about marrying the production with the clutch gene in the high-leverage moments.

Dak Prescott is confident Lamb will bounce back

Prescott told reporters after the game Lamb took full accountability in the locker room but he agrees with Schottenheimer that it wasn't all on the star receiver.

"It wasn’t just those plays — there are throws out there I want back too," Prescott said. "But it’s game one, and he’s a guy who makes those plays. He’s going to make those plays. I’m not going to get down on him, I’m not going to lose confidence in him by any means. He’ll make those plays."
