Here we go again. Just when you thought the San Francisco 49ers might catch a break this season, Brock Purdy decides to collect injuries like they’re trading cards. The young quarterback is now dealing with both a left shoulder issue and a toe injury that have head coach Kyle Shanahan playing the uncertainty game ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Purdy’s status for the upcoming game is genuinely up in the air. Shanahan, never one to give reporters the satisfaction of a straight answer, essentially said they’ll “see how the practice week goes”
Now, before we all start panicking about the 49ers’ season imploding before it really gets started, let’s remember that Purdy has shown remarkable resilience throughout his still-young NFL career. But shoulder and toe injuries for a quarterback? That’s like asking a pianist to perform with mittens on. The mechanics just don’t work the same way.
If Purdy can’t suit up, enter Mac Jones – the former New England Patriots quarterback who was essentially shown the door after a tumultuous stint in Foxborough. It’s almost poetic in a twisted way. Jones went from being the Patriots’ supposed future franchise quarterback to riding the bench.
The irony isn’t lost on anyone that Jones might get his chance to prove himself while wearing red and gold instead of the patriotic colors of his former team. The 49ers coaching staff clearly saw something in him when they acquired him, though whether that something translates to success against a Saints team that’s always hungry for an upset remains to be seen.
Kyle Shanahan has had more starting quarterbacks than some people have had jobs. From Jimmy Garoppolo to Trey Lance to Purdy, and now potentially Mac Jones, it’s like watching a very expensive game of musical chairs where nobody wants the music to stop playing.
The fact that we’re even discussing this scenario speaks to both the unpredictable nature of the NFL and the 49ers’ seemingly cursed relationship with quarterback health. Remember when Lance was supposed to be the future? Or when Garoppolo was the steady veteran presence? Now we’re potentially looking at Jones, who couldn’t make it work in New England, as the guy who might need to keep San Francisco’s playoff hopes alive.
The New Orleans Saints are probably licking their chops at the possibility of facing a backup quarterback making his first start in a 49ers uniform. There’s nothing defensive coordinators love more than game-planning against a quarterback who hasn’t had significant reps with the first-team offense in a new system. Then again the Saints are a terrible team and looked awful against the mediocre Arizona Cardinals.
Whether it’s Purdy fighting through his injuries or Mac Jones getting an unexpected opportunity to resurrect his career, the 49ers find themselves in another quarterback predicament. The good news? They’ve dealt with this before and somehow managed to remain competitive. The bad news? Eventually, this constant uncertainty at the position has to catch up with them.
For now, 49ers fans can only hope that Purdy’s issues are minor and that he’ll be ready to go come Sunday. But if not, they’ll get to see if Mac Jones can prove that his Patriots tenure was more about system fit than actual talent. Either way, it’s going to be an interesting week in the Bay Area.
