Newly hired Broncos special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi wasted no time assembling his special teams coaching staff, starting with Marwan Maalouf as Denver’s assistant special teams coach.
Maalouf has been out of NFL coaching for the past four years but holds an impressive resume.
Maalouf, 48, received his first NFL coaching gig in 2005 with the Cleveland Browns after coaching alongside Rizzi at Rutgers University.
He was hired as a special teams quality control coach before becoming a special teams assistant under John Harbaugh in Baltimore. From there, Maalouf received his first special teams coordinator job with the Indianapolis Colts in 2012.
Following a season with Indianapolis, Marwan Maalouf became a special teams assistant with the Miami Dolphins, remaining from 2013 to 2018.
Maalouf left Miami for his second special teams coordinator role with the Minnesota Vikings from 2019 to 2020.
After Maalouf’s contract was not renewed by Minnesota, he became a free agent and has remained without a team since then. Now, Maalouf is back in the NFL with a familiar face in Darren Rizzi.
There was speculation on whether Rizzi would bring in longtime Saints special teams assistant Pete Galiano, but Galiano was promoted to special teams coordinator after Rizzi’s departure.
The NFL coaching carousel works in Marwan Maalouf’s favor in this situation.
