Broncos Defense Alone Could Lead Them to Playoffs

As the clock hit triple zeros in the 4th quarter of the Broncos’ opening game vs. the Titans, many fans felt unsatisfied. Despite a convincing 20-12 victory, the play of the team raised many question marks.

Their shiniest bright spot, however, might just be enough to carry the Broncos to the playoffs.

Taking Down The Titans

Let’s not sugarcoat — Denver’s defense is the main reason they defeated Cam Ward and the Titans on Sunday. The offense was sluggish, mustering up 26 rushing yards in the first half, along with Bo Nix throwing 2 interceptions.

Despite this, the defense showed why they are one of the best in the league — especially under pressure.  After Marvin Mims Jr. muffed a punt in the fourth quarter, which Tennessee recovered, it seemed the Broncos were going to lose their slim 13-12 lead. Fortunately, Jonah Elliss and Zach Allen had other plans. They recorded back-to-back sacks to push the Titans out of field goal range.

Yes, They Are That Good

Staples to the defense like Nik Bonitto, Justin Strnad, Jonathon Cooper and Ja’Quan McMillian all had a sack. Denver combined for an impressive six on the day.

The constant pressure that Denver’s defense applies has been a huge part of their game for years. Now that they have a capable offense to compliment their deadly defense, there’s no telling how good this team can be.

The Broncos collectively turned the ball over four times on Sunday. They also didn’t allow a touchdown. The fact that they were able to win comfortable despite such a lopsided performance was a nod to how dominant and scary the defense is.

“Defense wins championships” is a cliche everyone football player heard from their old youth football coach, but don’t be mistaken — it also applies to this Broncos team.

According to Pro Football Reference, Denver finished third in the league in overall team defense last season. The teams they were wedged between? The Eagles and Chiefs, at second and fourth respectively. Being in the company of those two titans is telling enough of how important defense is.

Veteran Leader

Like any great team, winning starts in the locker room — and the Broncos are no exception. Having a strong veteran presence is essential to a winning formula, and it all starts with reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Pat Surtain II. Surtain is an electric force on defense, the kind of player every team dreams of anchoring their secondary.

Surtain’s impact was undeniable last season, allowing just 306 passing yards all year—a testament to his elite play and leadership. He also allowed a measly 39.1 passer rating when targeted.

On Sunday, Denver’s defense showed that they can pick up the slack when the offense is playing poorly.

This theme seems to be translating from last season. Last year against the Jets, the Broncos squeaked out a 10-9 victory. These close wins in ugly games are a testament to how good the defense is. When the offense isn’t clicking, the defense can keep Denver in games.

Get Excited

Don’t start panicking about the offense now Broncos fans. Bo Nix and company will figure their side of the ball out and lead Denver to some strong victories. For now though, they may have to lean on the defense for extra support, but they’re more than capable of picking up the slack.

The Denver defense are going to turn a lot of heads this season. And if the Broncos put together a decent offense to compliment it? It might just be 2015 all over again.
