The Denver Broncos have become almost a forgotten part of their upcoming game versus the New York Jets due to the fact that the 0-5 Jets are seen by some as a lost cause ahead of the overseas contest.
While speaking with reporters in London, Broncos head coach Sean Payton made it clear he doesn't want to hear that the matchup versus the winless Jets is a "trap game" for his 3-2 team.
"Each week it's the ability to refocus on the next challenge," Payton said about his mindset, per Nick Shook of the NFL's website. "I think oftentimes the games are won and lost right here [Wednesday], [Thursday] and Friday. So these guys understand in our league, it's different than college. We're not getting a chance to play a I-AA or FCS school. These are all professional teams, and we'll handle it that way."
It's worth noting that Payton and first-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn are quite familiar with each other. As Randy Lange of the Jets' website pointed out, Glenn served as the New Orleans Saints' defensive backs coach when Payton was that club's head coach from 2016 through the 2020 season.
Thus, Payton knows how Glenn's personality could provide a spark for a locker room that may have needed to get away from the New York/New Jersey area following a lopsided home loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
ESPN stats show that the Jets' defense surrendered the second-most points per game (31.4) in the league over the season's first five weeks. Additionally, the Jets are responsible for the first defense in NFL history to record no takeaways over the opening five contests of a campaign since turnovers became an official stat in 1933.
Nevertheless, second-year Denver quarterback Bo Nix won't be taking Gang Green lightly.
"I think in the league, quite honestly, it's a little disrespectful to consider anybody a trap team," Nix directly said. "They're an NFL team, and they're going to have some really good players on their defense, and it's not really a trap game. I think any game you can walk in and slip up and lose, that's just the league. If you're not careful in a way, all of them could be because they're that good of an opponent."
As of Thursday morning, ESPN BET had Denver as a 6.5-point favorite for the Week 6 game that will be held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It sounds like Payton and Nix want the Broncos to ignore that line heading into the weekend.
