Broncos DT Mike Purcell out for season, will undergo foot surgery

The Denver Broncos lost more than a game to rivals the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. 

Denver head coach Vic Fangio has confirmed that starting nose tackle Mike Purcell will miss the rest of the season because of a foot problem. Per Mike Klis of 9News, the 29-year-old is expected to have surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury. 

Purcell withdrew from Sunday's contest after the fifth defensive play and didn't make the box score for what became a 43-16 defeat that dropped Denver to 2-4 overall. Purcell previously played through a knee issue.

He joined the Broncos in April 2019 and tallied a career-best 48 total tackles during his first season with the club. Purcell accumulated 15 tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss and a quarterback hit across six contests this year before Sunday. As noted by the club's official website, Purcell put pen to paper on a contract extension through 2023 earlier this month.
