The Denver Broncos drafted Texas Longhorns cornerback Jahdae Barron in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Barron figures to slot in opposite of the Broncos' reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Patrick Surtain II, in Denver's secondary.

Although Barron was the 20th overall pick, the transition from college to the NFL can be a difficult one. However, the Texas product seems to be fitting in just fine alongside one of the best corners in the league.

"He's very smart, he's savvy. He understands the game pretty well. Coaches put him around different positions," Surtain said. "I think that's harder to learn coming in as a rookie, especially with V.J's playbook, but it feels like he's handling it pretty well, and it seems like he’s up to schedule on things, so I’m excited to see what he brings to the table this year.”

The Broncos defense was already one of the top units in the NFL in 2024, and the addition on Barron along with Talanoa Hufanga at safety and Dre Greenlaw at linebacker in free agency should only take it to another level.

With the Longhorns, Barron's versatility stood out, which could pay dividends in smoothing his transition to the NFL in defensive coordinator Vance Joseph's playbook. Barron played all over Texas' secondary, going from boundary corner to the slot, and even playing some box safety.

The highly touted rookie has impressed his counterpart early on, but his head coach has also taken notice. Sean Payton praised Barron's ability to understand the game and defend opponents' routes well.

"If you're watching closely, some people transition and stop very quickly. He's got really quick twitch, I'd say he's sticky in coverage. But I think he's one of those players that already, at a young age, understands splits," Payton said. "I worry sometimes with the corners that defend - if you're defending every route, you're defending no route. And he's real savvy, as to a tight split, he eliminates 80 percent of what could be run. So, you feel a veteran player."

Barron has already made strides throughout spring practices in his first offseason, and now he gets a taste of his first week of training camp. The Longhorn's standout should get every opportunity to show his talents opposite Surtain in his rookie season, and he's already making a positive impression.
