Broncos look like viable Super Bowl contenders after historic comeback against Giants

The Denver Broncos have put on a strong performance through the first seven weeks of the season, going 5-2 and overtaking the Los Angeles Chargers for the lead in the AFC West.

Putting together one of the more impressive performances in a game this season, second-year quarterback Bo Nix helped lead the Broncos to a 33-32 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday. In a game that at one point appeared out of reach, Nix made NFL history by leading a fourth-quarter comeback to showcase why the Broncos should be taken seriously as a Super Bowl-contending team.

Broncos are viable Super Bowl contenders

The Broncos' statement win against the Giants affirmed they’re a legitimate team to contend for the Super Bowl, as they answered all the questions surrounding them after barely winning against the winless New York Jets, 13-11, on Oct. 12.

The Broncos now have two comeback victories when they've trailed by 14-plus points in the fourth quarter this season, per ESPN Insights. The other came against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5, where Nix led the offense to a 21-17 victory, scoring 18 unanswered points. The rest of the league only has two such wins, and the Broncos are only the fourth team in the last 20 years to pull off the feat.

With one of the league's best defenses (273.1 yards) that's leading the NFL in sacks (34.0) thanks to linebackers Nik Bonitto (tied for third in the league with 8.0) and Jonathan Cooper (fourth with 6.0), along with Nix and the offense finally finding the formula to their success on offense (347.0 yards), head coach Sean Payton has the Broncos playing like a well-oiled machine.

Payton showed his ability to coach Nix through the pressures of leading a team to victory when all hope appeared lost. On Sunday, Nix became the first player in NFL history to have two or more rushing and passing touchdowns (four total) in one quarter. Nix’s 1,556 passing yards have him ranked eighth-best in the NFL, while his 11 touchdowns have him in a tie for ninth

Payton, who won the 2009 Super Bowl with future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints, is the perfect coach to help lead the Broncos to their first Super Bowl in a decade (2015), if he can keep the offense and defense going in similar fashion.
