Patrick Surtain II, the NFL’s 2024 Defensive Player of the Year, boldly claims the Denver Broncos can topple the AFC West’s giants, the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers. His fiery confidence signals a team ready to disrupt the division’s hierarchy.

“We know it’s a great challenge ahead,” Surtain told DailyMail.com. “We’re looking to change the dynamic of the NFL a bit. We believe we can compete with anyone.”

Surtain’s optimism stems from Denver’s return to the playoffs in 2024, their first since 2015. His career-high four interceptions and 11 pass deflections earned him the Defensive Player of the Year honor, making him only the second Bronco since Randy Gradishar in 1978 to claim it. His lockdown coverage anchored a defense that led the NFL with 63 sacks.

Gradishar anchored Denver’s 1977 Super Bowl run, and Surtain shares that ambition. “We had a good playoff run last year, but we’re aiming higher,” he said. A Super Bowl push demands dethroning the Chiefs, who are seeking redemption after losing Super Bowl LIX.

The Christmas Day clash at Arrowhead looms large. “Playing the Chiefs, with their accolades, will be a great matchup,” Surtain said. “The anticipation is going to be crazy.”

Despite Kansas City’s back-to-back Christmas games, Surtain remains unfazed. Denver’s 2023 win over the Chiefs at Arrowhead boosts their confidence. “Our team chemistry gives us an edge against anyone,” he added.

The Broncos haven’t swept the Chiefs in a season series since 2014, a drought that stings. While Surtain doesn’t directly call out Kansas City, there’s a simmering jealousy behind his tone. Watching the Chiefs lift multiple Lombardis while Denver rebuilt has fueled a locker-room edge. “Their accolades are great,” he noted, “but we’re coming for that level now.”

Surtain’s focus is relentless improvement. “I prioritize getting stronger, faster, and refining my skills each year,” he explained. His offseason reset fuels his drive to dominate.

He’s now nominated for the 2025 ESPYs’ Best NFL Player—“a prestigious honor,” he said. As the only defensive nominee alongside offensive stars Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley, and Lamar Jackson, Surtain aims to lead Denver past the Chiefs and reshape the AFC West.
