The Denver Broncos just had a fourth quarter for the ages in Week Seven. They beat the New York Giants 33-32 in incredible fashion. Describing what happened in this game would get a script writer fired because of how unrealistic it sounds.
Bo Nix had as polarizing a game you can have as a quarterback. The first three quarters were some of the worst films he had put out all year. He was consistently overthrowing his receivers and was off target on any of the intermediate throws.
That fourth quarter, however, is why Broncos country needs to go to war for their guy. According to Pro Football Focus, Nix had an adjusted completion percentage of 76.2%, had 2018 total yards, and four total touchdowns. In the clutch, he was money.
Nix made big-time throws to Marvin Mims and Courtland Sutton down the stretch when they needed it. Even after the Broncos found themselves down 32-30 with 37 seconds left, he didn’t flinch. He was calm, cool, and collected, and set up Wil Lutz for the game winner.
It’s cool to see this young team grow in front before our very eyes. The Achilles heel of this team has been not being able to finish out close games. The last three games have all been within four points in the final moments, and Denver has been able to find a way.
On a day the defense played its worst game of the season, the Broncos still came out on top. That’s how you grow in the league. Despite the defense struggling today, they made the play of the game.
Down 26-16 with less than four minutes to go, Justin Strnad intercepted Jaxson Dart on third down and changed the complexion of the game. The Broncos got the ball at the red zone down 10 with 3:51 remaining, and there was real hope.
It was looking dire for the longest time. Denver was down 19-0 to begin the fourth. Then, after their scoring drive, they gave up another score, going down 26-8 with around 10 minutes to go.
I still don’t know how they pulled it off.
The win is great and thrilling. There is nothing bad to say about that fourth quarter, especially offensively. The first three quarters, however, played out eerily similar to the game in London last week.
The offense was just bad. They could not establish a ground game, and the play calling once again left people with questions. The play calls still seem way too exotic for their own good.
Last week, I said to keep it simple in terms of play design. Today, I look up and see Bo Nix throwing a proper pass directly behind himself to the running back. Not a toss, but an actual pass.
Sean Payton needs to let Nix hunt a little bit more down the field. A screen game is a quarterback’s best friend when used at the right times. Today, it just seemed predictable and handicapped the offense for so long.
Defensively, it was a mess. The 32 points are not a cause for concern because they happen even to the best of them. However, the penalty this team accumulates week after week is getting concerning.
Denver had 12 penalties that went for 127 yards. In the drive that put the Giants up 32-30, they were gift-wrapped around 50 yards of penalties. That has to change now and fast.
The Broncos can’t expect to win like this every week. The little things have to get better.
It was the perfect ending to a day, the late great Demaryius Thomas was inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame. On a day when the Super Bowl 50 champion team was celebrated and did the honors of introducing DT into the history books.
The skies were beaming blue and orange today. That’s the only way to explain this game today.
Now, the Broncos sit at 5-2 and sit in first place of the AFC West. Are they a perfect team? Absolutely not. Is this a team worth believing in in the long run? Damn right they are.
