Broncos QB Russell Wilson makes bold promise about offense

Russell Wilson promises the pouring rain cloud surrounding his offense will subside.

"We need two touchdowns a game. I know how to do that," Wilson said in a Wednesday news conference. "We will find that, and we will figure it out."

The Broncos' offense needs to turn a corner. Through nine games, it ranks last in scoring, 22nd in total yards per game, and 31st in third-down percentage.

As a result, their playoff chances plummeted. Per FiveThirtyEight, they have a three percent chance to make the playoffs.

Wilson was highly-regarded before Denver acquired him in a trade from Seattle in March.

During his first 10 seasons in Seattle, Wilson never completed less than 60 percent of his passes and posted a 66.2 QBR. This season he's hitting on 57.4 percent of his pass attempts and registered a QBR of 33.0 in eight starts, 27th among starting quarterbacks.

Multiple theories explain the failure to meet expectations, including head coach Nathaniel Hackett and Wilson's inability to develop synergy. Hackett's redesigning the offense to cater to Wilson's strengths.

"We want to put him in positions where he can make plays and feels comfortable making plays," Hackett said in a Wednesday news conference. "Just not thinking and going out there, having fun playing ball."

If Wilson starts to play well, the Broncos can make a late playoff push since their defense is elite. Denver has the league's top-scoring defense and is second in yards allowed.

"The defense has given us a chance to win every game. Now the offense has to answer the bell," Wilson said.
