The Denver Broncos had a good week going. Sean Payton's team was back on the field for the start of their offseason program, players were getting work in and the energy around the building felt positive. That changed fast on Friday.

Jonathan Cooper, one of the more reliable pass rushers in the AFC, was arrested in Colorado early Friday morning on charges tied to domestic violence.

Jail records show the 28-year-old was booked into Douglas County at 2:38 a.m. following an incident that reportedly started just after 11 p.m. Thursday night. He faces two counts of domestic violence summons and a criminal mischief count.

An arrest affidavit obtained by 9News states that both Cooper and his girlfriend were taken into custody after an incident at his apartment. The dispute reportedly started over allegations of infidelity. According to the affidavit, the woman grabbed Cooper's phone and threw it across the room then picked it up to go through it.

Jonathon Cooper Arrest: What the Affidavit Says

Reports suggest that things turned physical from there. The affidavit states Cooper braced his neck against the woman's neck while trying to get his phone back.

Authorities also allege he told her he planned to destroy her phone before biting it and breaking it. His bond was set at $1,000 per the New York Post. Cooper appeared before a judge Friday with another court date reportedly set for Monday.

The Broncos acknowledged the situation without going further into detail.

"We are aware of the matter and are gathering more information," the team said in a statement to 9News.

Denver selected Cooper in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft. His first two seasons were quiet but he broke out in 2023 with 8.5 sacks and earned a four-year $60 million extension in November 2024.

The production he brought to that defense was real. Over five seasons Cooper recorded 31.5 sacks and 266 combined tackles. He hit a personal best of 10.5 sacks in 2024 then followed it up with eight sacks and 23 combined tackles in 2025.

He played in all three of Denver's playoff games last season including recording a sack in the AFC Championship Game loss to the New England Patriots.

How the Broncos and the NFL handle what comes next is yet to be detailed, as the legal process moves forward.
