The Denver Broncos' defense was one of the best in the NFL last year. With the Broncos' additions this offseason, they could top the list in 2025. Reigning Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain II has a new weapon beside him in first-round pick Jahdae Barron, and the Broncos brought in former San Francisco 49ers Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw in free agency.
But the Broncos have another member of the secondary who could be ready for a breakout season, which would take Denver's defense to yet another level.
Cornerback Riley Moss is entering his third season as a Bronco after the team drafted him in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Moss played in 14 games as a rookie, mostly on special teams, and got his chance to start in the secondary last season.
The young cornerback took advantage, putting together a strong season. Moss collected 86 tackles, 8 passes defended, a tackle for loss, and an interception. He also forced and recovered a fumble.

With the Broncos' offseason acquisitions, Moss will likely be targeted more this season. But the third-year corner is ready and excited for the challenge.
“As long as I’m across from DPOY, it’s going to be like that, and I love the challenge. It makes it fun. It makes it fun to come in to work knowing it’s on me," Moss said after Wednesday's practice ( h/t SB Nation). "I’m going to be on an island, and what can I do? That’s what I think makes this game so beautiful and why I love the position that I’m in."
One thing Moss did this offseason to prepare for 2025 was to put on some extra muscle. He added nearly eight pounds of muscle this offseason in an attempt to be more competitive on the ball. Moss wants to be more efficient making plays after collecting eight passes defended, but just one interception in 2024.
“I think the point of attack when the ball’s up in the air. Some of those 50/50 balls being stronger, not getting pushed off," Moss said. "That was a big thing for me this offseason was getting bigger, getting stronger, being able to push against the receiver and be a little bit more physical.”
With the reigning Defensive Player of the Year in Surtain and a first-round pick in Barron playing alongside him in 2025, Moss expects to get a lot more targets. But if the increased muscle helps him improve from last season, the Broncos' corner could have a special season.
Last year, Moss' numbers were very comparable to Surtain's. Moss was targeted 41 more times and gave up 421 more yards than Surtain. However, Moss allowed just a 65 percent completion rate compared to Surtain's 61 percent, and Surtain's 8.6 yards per completion was less than three yards fewer than Moss' 11.1 yards allowed per completion.
Although the third-year corner may be the star of the secondary, he's done quite a nice job holding his own, and he's ready to break out in 2025.
