Last week, Taylor Rapp took part in a Broncos workout. The veteran safety’s next NFL gig will now send him to Denver.
Rapp agreed to join the Broncos on Thursday, as first reported by Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. He will now spend the remainder of training camp and the preseason competing for a depth spot. Rapp had been on the open market since being released in March.
The Bills’ decision to move on from Rapp ended his three-season run in Buffalo. The former Ram worked as a full-time starter across the 2024 and ’25 campaigns, although he was limited to just six games last year. Rapp underwent knee surgery in October, leaving him unavailable for the end of the season and the playoffs.
That injury, coupled with underwhelming play when on the field, resulted in a lengthy spell on the open market. In Denver, Rapp will look to offer his newest team with experienced depth. The 28-year-old has 72 career starts to his name, and he posted 82 tackles, a pair of interceptions and six pass deflections in 2024. The Broncos have Talanoa Hufanga and Brandon Jones as holdovers from last season, though, and they are in line to remain starters moving forward.
Denver’s safety depth chart was nevertheless dealt a blow when P.J. Locke departed in free agency. Rapp could look to serve as his replacement. Locke only handled a 17% defensive snap share in 2025, but he was a regular presence on special teams. A similar role could now await Rapp as he contends for playing time with several third phase specialists and younger, less proven, safety options.
The Broncos entered Thursday near the top of the NFL in spending power with over $37MM in cap space. This Rapp deal will no doubt be a one-year commitment at or near the veteran minimum, so further additions could be feasible in the time leading up to Week 1.
