Brother Of Longtime NFL Referee Says The League Is 'Rigged'

The NFL has been accused of rigging games for the Kansas City Chiefs multiple times this postseason. Is there truly something fishy going on behind the scenes? The league's former vice president of officiating offered his thoughts.

Dean Blandino started off his career in the NFL during the 1994 season. Five years later, he helped the league sort out its instant replay program. After leaving the NFL behind for a while, he returned in 2013 as the VP of officiating. He held that title through the 2017 season.

During an appearance on SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio, Blandino was asked about the favorable calls the Chiefs have received this postseason. He admit that his brother is convinced the NFL is rigged.

Blandino, however, said the NFL is not intentionally fixing games so the Chiefs can come out on top.

"My brother who is convinced that the league is rigged, that is convinced that I signed an NDA when I left the league office that I cannot tell anybody that it’s rigged," Blandino said. "We grew up in the same household, by the way. I said, ‘Listen, there’s no conspiracy.' With the officials - there’s too many variables, there’s too much going on. To me, it’s the hardest sport. When you think about football, with seven different officials, to say, 'OK, I’m gonna rig this game' or 'the game is rigged from the league office down.' The officials are just trying to get it right."

Blandino's brother isn't the only person who thinks the NFL is rigged. There's a petition going around that's titled: "Boycott NFL Games Until Adequate Officiating Fairness Measures Are Implemented."

At the end of the day, Blandino believes the Chiefs make their own luck by being perfect in key situations.

"The Chiefs have gotten the benefit of calls, but good teams make their own breaks," Blandino said.

Whether Blandino's right or not, the NFL's officiating crew will be under immense pressure next Sunday for Super Bowl LIX. Veteran official Ron Torbert has been tasked with calling the game between the Chiefs and Eagles.

Hopefully, there isn't any controversy in this year's Super Bowl.
