The Cleveland Browns close the NFL preseason with a defense rebuilt around interior youth and an offense still searching for rhythm, opening at home against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
Cleveland enters the year as an underdog in 16 of 17 look-ahead lines, with one of the NFL’s lowest projected win totals (5.5) and scoring outlooks after finishing last in points in 2024.
To make matters worse, on Thursday, beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot noted that All-Pro edge rusher Myles Garrett sat out of practice with a hip injury, a new development arriving just three days before the Bengals visit Huntington Bank Field.

Across camp and joint practices, Garrett looked like the most disruptive player on the field, drawing praise after reps against the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles.
Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz challenged him publicly this spring to have his best season after the star pass rusher signed a four-year extension.
"I really think Myles is going to have the best season of his career. And has to right?" Schwartz said. "I've told him before, what's that Spider-Man quote, 'with great power comes great responsibility' ... there's always pressure in this league but probably a little bit more so."
Garrett finished 2024 with 14.0 sacks, 22 tackles for loss and 47 total tackles in 17 games, marking the fourth straight season with at least 14 sacks, the only player to do so since sacks became official in 1982.
While Garrett has avoided any serious injuries over the course of his NFL career, there have been a few setbacks along the way.
In 2017, Garrett suffered a lateral sprain to his left foot in June minicamp before a right high-ankle sprain in practice on September 6, missing the first four games of the NFL season.
He also dealt with a Grade 1 concussion later that year that forced him to miss time, as well as a bicep strain and shoulder A/C joint sprain in 2022.
Last season, Garrett was listed on the team's injury report with foot, Achilles and thigh issues early in the season and had to visit an eye doctor after a freak incident late in the year.
Despite this, he played in all 17 games.
Garrett rarely misses time and the Browns have a history of holding him for maintenance when possible, but the timing of Cabot's report (three days before the opener) bears monitoring through Friday’s participation and Saturday’s game status.
