We are just a couple of days away from the start of the Cleveland Browns’ 2025 season, as they host the Cincinnati Bengals in an AFC North showdown. Cincinnati swept the Browns last year, but Cleveland still holds a 5-3 record against Joe Burrow when he’s under center for the Bengals.
For the Browns, the best path to victory will come through strong defense, which is likely to be the team’s identity again this year. Cleveland’s offense struggled badly last season, and the defense took a significant step back from its 2023 form. For the Browns to improve, the defense must return to its dominant ways while the offense takes at least a modest step forward. Confidence appears to be high for one Browns Pro Bowler who will be critical to that effort this season.
“I like making plays on the ball and being a factor in a game,” Ward said Wednesday. “I’m looking forward to going into the game, and hopefully they target me a lot. Go send Joe Burrow some texts, tell him to throw at me, and we’ll go from there. I’m gonna enjoy it.”

Ward has tallied 42 tackles and three interceptions against the Bengals, including a memorable 100-yard pick-six on a pass intended for Ja’Marr Chase. Overall, the Pro Bowl corner has fared well against Cincinnati’s star wide receiver duo of Chase and Tee Higgins. Now, he’ll need to back up his words if Burrow does decide to test him. With Martin Emerson Jr. sidelined, Ward’s performance becomes even more crucial, as Cleveland’s cornerback room is already thinner than expected.
Defensive points and turnovers could be the difference in giving the Browns an opening-week win over the Bengals. All eyes will be on the Chase–Ward matchup, the very definition of iron sharpening iron whenever the two face off.
