Browns Coach Assigns Blame After Controversial Shedeur Sanders Decision

The Cleveland Browns lost to the Tennessee Titans 31-29 on Sunday in the third start of Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders' NFL career.

Sanders had his best statistical game since taking over from fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel in Week 12. The former Colorado Buffaloes star completed 23 of 42 passes for 364 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also ran the ball three times for 29 yards and a touchdown.

The fifth-round draft pick gave his team a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter. He threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Harold Fannin Jr. with 1 minute, three seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 31-29, pending a two-point conversion. Head coach Kevin Stefanski went for the two-point try, but removed Sanders from the game.

As you could tell from the final score, the point-after try failed and Stefanski's controversial decision to take out his red-hot quarterback backfired.

Running back Quinshon Judkins took the snap out of the wildcat formation and was not on the same page as wide receiver Gage Larvadain, resulting in a disastrous incompletion. The Titans held on to the two-point lead and ran out the clock to give their own rookie quarterback, Cam Ward, his second win of the season.

After the game, Stefanski had to face the music about his decision. He stepped up and accepted the blame for taking Sanders out and for the play call.

“I’m responsible for all of it,” Stefanski said.

The loss does not change the Browns' season outcome much, but the decision Stefanski made with the game on the line will go down as another piece of evidence in the popular theory that Sanders has not been set up for success since being drafted by Cleveland.

The Browns have four tough games remaining this season, starting next week on the road against the Chicago Bears. Stefanski has been naming his starting QB on a week-to-week basis, but analysts expect Sanders to start for the rest of the year.
