Browns' Deshaun Watson comments on hiring of OC Ken Dorsey

During the latest edition of his "QB Unplugged" podcast, Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson commented publicly for the first time about his club replacing offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt with Ken Dorsey this offseason. 

As shared by Brandon Little of A to Z Sports, Watson mentioned Dorsey's stint as an assistant and, later, as offensive coordinator with the Buffalo Bills that ran from 2019 until he was dismissed this past November. 

"I'm out in L.A. training with a couple of guys who played in Buffalo and once they heard the news and I asked them about Ken, they were like, 'It's super exciting,'" Watson said. "He wanna score a lot of points, he wanna be the top offense in the league and he wants everybody to be successful."

During his introductory news conference earlier this month, Dorsey referred to Watson as "a top quarterback in this league that can operate and help us win a bunch of football games." 

On the podcast, Watson pointed out that Dorsey was quarterbacks coach with the Carolina Panthers when Cam Newton earned Most Valuable Player honors for the 2015 regular season. 

Watson also praised Dorsey for helping Josh Allen become a legitimate MVP candidate over the past several years. 

"I'm super excited to get up there in Cleveland and get the playbook and just learn from him," Watson added about Dorsey. "I heard his press conference, too. That was dope to hear what he said about making me one of those types of quarterbacks again."

Watson joined the Browns from the Houston Texans in March 2022 but thus far has played in fewer than 12 full games since that transaction. He missed the first 11 contests of the 2022 season while serving a suspension related to allegations of sexual misconduct during massage sessions, and he then suffered a campaign-ending shoulder injury after he appeared in six games this past fall. 

Veteran Joe Flacco became a Cleveland sports hero when he went 4-1 as Watson's most recent replacement en route to guiding the 2023 Browns to the playoffs. 

Flacco could return to the organization this spring as a backup, but the 39-year-old theoretically could give Dorsey and company something to think about if Watson produces even a handful of shaky performances early next season.
