Quarterback Deshaun Watson may not feature for the 3-2 Cleveland Browns when they play at the 3-3 Indianapolis Colts this coming Sunday but doesn't appreciate questions about his toughness as he recovers from a lingering injury in his throwing shoulder.
"You know, I’ve never been the type of guy that’s been questioned about my toughness, but I guess whatever they want to put out, then everyone’s entitled to their own opinions," Watson told reporters on Wednesday, per the Browns' official website. "As long as this locker room and this organization know who I am and what I’m dealing with, then that’s all that matters."
Watson suffered what's being called a strained right rotator cuff during Cleveland's Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 24 and didn't play in what became a 28-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 1.
It was subsequently reported during Cleveland's bye that the 28-year-old "aggravated" some teammates when he sat against Baltimore even though he was medically cleared, but both offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and head coach Kevin Stefanski later defended the signal-caller before Watson missed this past Sunday's 19-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
Watson didn't practice on Wednesday and indicated that backup P.J. Walker could receive a second-straight start this weekend.
"All the outside noise, all the other stuff is just, they are feeding off of what is said on social media and all that stuff isn’t real," Watson added during his comments. "What is real is in this locker room, and that’s all that matters."
Walker completed 18-of-34 passes for 192 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions against the Niners. Meanwhile, ESPN stats show that Watson ended Week 6 ranked 21st in the NFL among qualified players with a 46.7 adjusted QBR on the season.
It was reported last Friday that Watson "could miss multiple more games" because of his setback, but he said on Wednesday he could return any time between Thursday and "two weeks from now." Following Week 7, Cleveland next plays at the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 29.
