Browns take a big hit ahead of game against Dolphins, and it makes you wonder if a Pro Bowler’s time in Cleveland is over

The Cleveland Browns have made three trades already this NFL season, and they’ve pretty much told us what this year is going to be like. Cleveland sits at 1-5 and has already lost three games against AFC North opponents. Things aren’t going well for the Browns, and watching Joe Flacco tear it up for the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night was just another wrinkle in an already rough season.

Week 7 presents Cleveland with a winnable game against the weakest opponent they’ve faced so far. The 1-5 Miami Dolphins visit Cleveland on Sunday, and there isn’t much optimism around that franchise either. When the Browns take the field, they’ll have to do it without one of their top offensive starters.

David Njoku won’t play against the Dolphins

The Browns will be without former Pro Bowl tight end David Njoku, who is nursing a knee injury that surfaced last weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Njoku ranks third on the team in receiving with 223 yards and a touchdown, making his absence a tough blow for the offense. Additionally, DT Mason Graham, RT Jack Conklin, DT Mike Hall Jr., DE Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, and WR Gage Larvadain are all listed as questionable.

Njoku is in the final year of his second contract — a four-year deal he signed with the Browns in 2022. With the emergence of rookie TE Harold Fannin Jr., who leads the team with 254 receiving yards, many believe Njoku could be traded before the deadline. Moving him before the Nov. 4 deadline would make sense if the Browns don’t plan to re-sign the veteran, allowing them to gain an asset instead of losing him for nothing.

Njoku’s best season came in 2023, when he recorded 882 receiving yards and six touchdowns, breaking out down the stretch with Flacco as his quarterback. However, he hasn’t replicated that success since, finishing with 505 yards in 11 games last season. With Njoku sidelined on Sunday, expect more snaps for Blake Whiteheart in his place. If the Browns do trade Njoku, they’d be parting with a fan favorite who has fully embraced Cleveland. The fact that he hasn’t been placed on injured reserve suggests the injury isn’t serious — meaning a trade remains a possibility. Njoku will be a player to monitor through the start of November, and his absence this week only adds fuel to the speculation.
