Browns To Extend S Grant Delpit

Delpit was holding in when the the Browns began training camp practice on Wednesday. However, after general manager Andrew Berry came out to personally inform Delpit about his new contract (video via Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN), the sixth-year man began taking part in drills. This is the second extension between Berry and Delpit’s camp, having previously hammered out a three-year, $36MM pact in December 2023.

Delpit’s first extension made him the game’s 12th-highest paid safety at the time. His new accord places him sixth at his position in guarantees, ninth in average salary ($16MM) and 10th in total value. The Browns now have Delpit, a career-long member of the franchise, under wraps through 2029.

Delpit was a second-round pick in 2020, Berry’s first draft as the Browns’ GM, though the ex-LSU Tiger’s career got off to an unfortunate start when he tore his Achilles in training camp. He missed his entire rookie season as a result. The 6-foot-3, 208-pounder bounced back to play 15 games in 2021, though, and he became a full-time starter in his third season. Overall, Delpit has started in 68 of 78 games, deflected 21 passes, hauled in seven interceptions and recorded 6.5 sacks.

In 2025, the second 17-game season of Delpit’s career, he joined fellow safety Ronnie Hickman in playing over 95% of defensive snaps. The versatile Delpit lined up all over the field, amassing 391 snaps in the box, 271 in the slot, 227 at free safety and 96 along the defensive line. While he only had one pick, Delpit logged personal bests in quarterback hits (seven), sacks (three), forced fumbles (two) and fumble recoveries (two). His performance ranked an above-average 40th among Pro Football Focus’ 91 qualified safeties.

Delpit was a quality contributor on the league’s fourth-ranked defense last year, though the unit has since switched coordinators (from Jim Schwartz to Mike Rutenberg) and lost reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. The Browns traded Garrett to the Rams in a June 1 shocker, but that did not trigger a fire sale for the rebuilding club. Instead of shipping out the likes of Ward and Delpit, now their two longest-tenured players, the Browns are in position to go forward with them for the foreseeable future.
