The Cleveland Browns worked out former wide receiver and special teams maven James Proche on Tuesday, and apparently the organization liked what they saw. He was signed to the practice squad ahead of the Week 5 road trip against the New York Jets.

Proche hasn’t appeared in an NFL regular season game since appearing in nine games with the Tennessee Titans in 2025. The 30-year-old, selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2020 NFL Draft in Round 6 out of SMU, has appeared in 71 NFL games.

Tylan Wallace Dealing With Knee Injury

Wide receiver and return man Tylan Wallace (knee) is a similar player to Proche, but he missed the Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to a knee injury. There must be some concern that Wallace will not be able to suit up for Week 5, so the team brought in Proche, who could be used as a plug-and-play option on special teams.

Proche spent two seasons with the Browns in 2023 and 2024, appearing in 19 NFL games. He had just three receptions on three targets, all in ’24, going for 21 yards and one first down. His contributions were almost exclusively in the return game.

In 2023, Proche had 22 punt returns for 197 yards, and one kick return for 19 yards. In 2024, he had 19 punt returns for 172 yards, while again, returning one kick for 19 yards. He also made one solo tackle on special teams in each of the two seasons.

In addition to the Proche signing, defensive tackle Chris Williams was signed to the practice squad, too, while running back Eric Gray, punter Wes Pahl and offensive tackle Xavier Truss were cut from the practice squad. Neither of those three players appeared in a regular-season game for the Browns.

Kalia Davis has 21-Day Practice Window Opened

In other news, defensive tackle Kalia Davis (quadriceps) had his 21-day practice window opened. He was placed on the reserve/injured list in late August after suffering a quadriceps injury at practice due training camp. The team can either decide to activate him during the 21-day window, or he’ll be lost for the season if he isn’t added back in three weeks.
