Bryce Young speaks honestly about uncertain future with Panthers

Just last week, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales said that he feels quarterback Bryce Young now has "total command of the system."

That's all well and good, but the Panthers thus far have made no long-term commitment to Young other than picking up the fifth-year option for 2027 attached to his rookie contract. While speaking with Joseph Person of The Athletic at his third annual football camp over the weekend, Young opened up about how his play during the 2026 NFL season could impact whether or not he's with the Panthers at this time next year.

Bryce Young knows the 2026 season is "very important" for his future

"It is a very, very important year for me, just like every single year is," Young acknowledged. "I don’t take my job for granted. I’m very blessed to be able to go out there and be the quarterback for an NFL team, for the Panthers. There’s never a time that’s not important, never a time that that’s not the biggest priority. Of course, it’s huge. Coach talks about it all the time — every day has to be the most important day. Every practice has to be the most important practice. I try to take that mentality into all I do."

Young most recently won just eight of 16 regular-season starts this past campaign, but the 8-9 Panthers nevertheless earned a playoff berth via tiebreaker advantage. While he passed for 264 yards and a touchdown (and also added a rushing score) in the Panthers' 34-31 wild-card playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams this past January, that one outing doesn't erase the more inconsistent stretches from his career resume.

According to Pro Football Reference, Young ended Week 18 of the 2025 regular season tied for 25th in the league among qualified players with a 47.6 adjusted QBR and tied for 26th with an 87.8 passer rating.

Bryce Young opens up about growing as a leader

Last week, an Associated Press (h/t ESPN) article detailed how Young is becoming a more vocal leader. He touched upon that subject during his chat with Person.

"When I walk into the building at work, my job is to move the team," Young explained. "My job is to be our leader. My job is to be whatever the team needs to be. As a leader, it’s on me to be pushing everyone, to challenge everyone to uphold the standard that we have set. It has to be early. It has to be often. We know there’s so much work to do. We have a great opportunity, a great locker room, a great group of guys. But we still have to earn everything."

It remains to be seen if Young will earn a long-term contract extension via his play this coming fall.
