Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield previously suggested he was at least somewhat annoyed that head coach Todd Bowles chose to kick a game-tying extra point instead of attempting a go-ahead two-point conversion late in regulation of this past Monday's overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Mayfield was asked if he lobbied to go for two after Tampa Bay found the end zone with 27 seconds remaining in the game's fourth quarter.
"I didn't lobby for it," Mayfield responded, as shared by the Buccaneers' website. "Hindsight is 20/20 when you look at it. [We] had a little momentum there on the long drive, they were gassed a little bit but, yeah, hindsight is 20/20. You're hoping to win the coin toss. I'm not a fan of the overtime rules. Obviously, it's gotten us twice now so, yeah, overtime rules – not the best."
Bowles has since said on multiple occasions that the weather impacted his decision, one that resulted in Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes guiding his offense down the field for a walk-off touchdown.
Per the JoeBucsFan website, Bowles told WFLA-TV sports chief Dan Lucas that the call to kick the extra point was made before Tampa Bay scored a touchdown in the final minute of regulation.
Meanwhile, Mayfield went viral on Monday night for his reaction to the Buccaneers losing the overtime coin toss.
"It just sucks not being able to have a chance to go win the game at that point – not knowing that, but not getting the first shot at it is really the disappointing part, which is why the coin toss kind of decided what the game was going to do and the outcome of it. It is what it is," Mayfield said when asked about the moment that occurred at midfield.
Tampa Bay needs to find a way to bounce back, as the club has dropped four of five games to fall to 4-5 on the season. The Buccaneers next host the 4-4 San Francisco 49ers this coming Sunday. As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Bucs as six-point underdogs for that matchup.
