We are less than three weeks until the Tampa Bay Buccaneers report for training camp. And while we are all looking forward to the return of football, we take time today to celebrate the 4th of July. A day full of fun, fireworks and of course food.
The cookout is an essential part of holiday festivities. Everyone getting together and sharing good food makes any holiday that much better. And when that food is from the grill then it’s that much better.
So in honor of that tradition, I wanted to have some fun. So in-depth player analysis, but with a twist. I go around the table and breakdown my Buccaneers, but as cookout foods.
One hundred percent, grade A beef! The burger is an essential part of any cookout. You know exactly what you’re getting and it is a centerpiece of the plate.
Are burgers flashy? No, but he can blow up a double team and make everyone around him happier. You can even add a little extra seasoning and have this burger lead the team in sacks on a given year. The ever constant and fantastic Vea Burger.
Let’s be honest, everybody loves ribs. They are excellent and can be good in different ways depending on how you prepare them. Ribs are absolutely one of the best cookout foods out there.
But, if we’re being truthful, ribs can be messy. You never know when they are going to drop barbecue sauce on your white T-shirt or throw a costly interception. There is always some risk with ribs, but Mayfield is absolutely worth it.
Every cookout needs a big german brat on the grill. While not as hardy as the burger, the brat is another essential piece of the plate. I wouldn’t call it the best food on the table, but it’s damn good and it’ll be hard to find someone who doesn’t like it.
The brat has a very simple game to him. Push the guy in front of him around and put opponents in the dirt. Add just a little bit of mustard and this fan favorite is ready to go.
Not to be confused with the bratwurst, the hotdog is for the simpler pallet. This will appeal to all the kids and is something you always want on the menu. Do you really need hotdogs with all these other food options? No, but you’ll still want to have them.
Everybody knows hotdogs. You see the highlights everywhere and when that juke move hits then it looks delicious. A veteran on the grill will know that offensive line play is more important, but that doesn’t make a great running back less awesome.
The versatility and greatness of chicken can’t be overstated. You can barbecue it, fry it, chop it and put it in a salad, etc. Really, chicken might be the most underrated foods on the table.
When you really think about it, chicken should be in the food hall of fame. In terms of tackles for a loss, overall tackles, forced fumbles and coverage skills, there isn’t much you can’t do with this entree at a high level. Something that everyone can enjoy.
Chips and dip are essential. Something to snack on while the main course is cooking and something that everyone wants. In many ways, it’s very much like pass rush.
No player is coming into the season with more chips on their shoulder than Reddick. He wants to prove that last season doesn’t define him and that he still has plenty of burst, bend and dip to his game.
Potato salad isn’t for everybody, but if you do it right then it can be great. A perfect blend of athletic ability and pass rush arsenal are always welcome at my table. And with a chef like Todd Bowles in charge, you know this career is going to turn out right.
Most people don’t really get what the Buccaneers have in homemade potato salad. They look at Pro Football Focus and think he’s a liability against the run. But unless you sit at the table and try this dish then you won’t really know how good it is.
Of course I had to save the best for last. A receiver whose routes are very smooth and his overall talent is ice cold. I don’t care what quarterback is cooking that day, you can’t mess up beer.
The main thing is to drink responsibly. The Bucs have too many weapons and if you go to this 31 year old future Hall of Famer too often then you’ll be in trouble. But you really just can’t go wrong with a high quality beer.
