Chris Godwin’s ankle injury is on the mend, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are optimistic he’ll be ready to go for Week One. There’s been very few updates on Chris Godwin’s rehab progress over the past couple of months
But we might get a better idea of where exactly Chris is in his recovery timeline as mandatory minicamp begins.
According to ESPN’s Jenna Laine, Godwin’s level of participation in offseason activities will be a key indicator of his progress.
“Godwin was off to a blistering start last season before the injury in Week 7 ended his season,” Laine reported. “So, what will his participation look like? (Will he be on the sideline the whole time? Will he work off to the side with a member of the training staff? Will he do positional drills?).”
“General manager Jason Licht has said he expects Godwin to be ready for Week 1 but hasn’t gone into detail beyond that. This could be the first time this offseason that we see how he’s recovering.”
Tuesday at Buccaneers mandatory minicamp head coach Todd Bowles spoke to the media about Godwin’s progress.
“Todd Bowles says Chris Godwin will continue to rehab in the Bucs’ facility until he’s cleared to move outside, but didn’t give any timetable for when that might be.”
Auman also reported on Godwin’s brief appearance at mandatory minicamp Tuesday,
“Bucs receiver Chris Godwin made an appearance in street clothes during Tuesday’s practice. No limp as he walked off the field.”
A cautious approach with Godwin wouldn’t be disastrous, thanks to the Buccaneers’ talented receiving corps, which includes Mike Evans, Cade Otton, Jalen McMillan, and rookie phenom Emeka Egbuka.
This approach gives Godwin the chance to progress through rehab at his own pace, hitting crucial milestones before aiming for a Week One return.
While seeing Godwin catching passes on the field would be a welcome sight, a healthy Week One debut would be even better.
