The Buccaneers won the opening coin toss and elected to receive, immediately establishing their commitment to the running game. Tampa Bay leaned heavily on Bucky Irving, grinding out a 14-play, seven-minute touchdown drive. The offensive line still struggled in pass protection, but its run blocking helped set the tone.
Alex Anzalone continued looking like a long-haired Barrett Ruud in the middle of the defense. Meanwhile, Rueben Bain Jr. remained aligned too far outside, limiting his ability to attack from a more favorable position.
Tampa Bay’s defense held Carolina scoreless on its opening possession. The Buccaneers continued pounding the ball offensively, but Cade Otton again struggled to make an impact as a blocker.
Special teams delivered a major play when Tampa Bay forced a muffed punt and recovered the football. The offense couldn’t turn the opportunity into a touchdown, settling for a field goal and a 10-0 lead.
Despite building an early advantage, Tampa Bay’s defensive alignment remained frustrating. David Walker, arguably the team’s best pass rusher, was dropping into coverage instead of consistently attacking the quarterback. The defense also returned to playing its defensive backs roughly eight yards off the line of scrimmage.
Yaya Diaby broke through with a sack of Bryce Young, forcing Carolina into third-and-long. The pressure continued when Al-Quadin Muhammad strip-sacked Young, allowing Calijah Kancey to scoop up the football and return it for a touchdown. Suddenly, Tampa Bay had a commanding 17-0 lead.
Carolina found an opening when Tampa Bay again played soft coverage. SirVocea Dennis ended up covering tight end Darren Waller, who scored a touchdown against the linebacker. However, the Buccaneers blocked the extra point and returned it for two points, making the score 19-6.
Tampa Bay continued controlling the game through its dominant rushing attack. Irving punched in his second rushing touchdown, extending the Buccaneers’ lead to 26-6.
The defense continued giving Carolina plenty of cushion, but Zyon McCollum made the Panthers pay. The cornerback jumped in front of a Young pass for an interception, setting Tampa Bay up at Carolina’s 30-yard line.
The Buccaneers’ offensive line began opening enormous running lanes, turning the ground game into a clinic. Mayfield eventually scrambled before lofting a touchdown pass to Tez Johnson. Tampa Bay entered halftime with a commanding 33-6 advantage.
Tampa Bay’s defense came out aggressively to begin the second half. Diaby recorded another sack, and back-to-back sacks forced Carolina to punt on its opening possession.
The pressure continued to disrupt Young, who threw another interception, this time to Tykee Smith. Tampa Bay couldn’t reach the end zone on the ensuing possession, settling for a field goal and extending its lead to 36-6.
The Buccaneers subsequently shifted toward keeping everything in front of them defensively. Carolina attempted to capitalize by going for it on fourth down deep in Tampa Bay territory, but the pass fell incomplete. The Buccaneers took over late in the third quarter.
Tampa Bay’s running game remained unstoppable, with the offensive line continuing to create massive holes. Running back Sean Tucker burst off tackle for a 46-yard touchdown, pushing the Buccaneers’ lead to 43-6.
Carolina eventually answered with a long completion to its tight end, followed by a touchdown. The score cut Tampa Bay’s advantage to 43-13 with just over five minutes remaining.
With the outcome firmly in hand, the Buccaneers began removing their offensive starters. Tampa Bay had controlled the matchup through its rushing attack, defensive pressure, takeaways and special-teams contributions.
The Buccaneers delivered a dominant performance across all three phases of the game. The offensive line paved the way for a relentless rushing attack, while the defense generated sacks, turnovers and a defensive touchdown.
There were still frustrating moments involving soft coverage, questionable pass-rush deployment and missed blocking assignments. However, those concerns couldn’t overshadow Tampa Bay’s overwhelming control of the matchup.
From Irving’s multiple touchdowns to Tucker’s explosive scoring run and Kancey’s defensive touchdown, Tampa Bay consistently made winning plays. The Buccaneers thoroughly dominated Carolina and delivered the kind of complete performance they desperately needed.
